Public Spaces

Play

The Ashes is an incredible asset to Howden and the wider Shire. The play facilities are great. As an adult I spent over an hour with three adult friends playing on the climbing frame, slide and other various equipment, but mainly the slide a few weeks ago. They're based in a serene location that exudes a beautiful calm but also has great spirit and a sense of JOY over the entire place. The Ashes really is a place to be proud of, you can almost touch the future possibilities that lie ahead waiting to be created in the physical space.

Howdenshire Forward are working on producing an overall design plan for improving the public space all around the town centre to make the town centre a better place to live, work and visit.

There will be further consultation on this work later on in 2008.

Human sized cardboard housesare taken from a large stack from the foyer of Impressions Gallery in York andplaced in to the empty spaces used regularly as begging pitches. The photographic record is fed back in conjunction with a map with the sites. Thiswork investigated the cultural importance of being a consumer. All that isconsumed needs packaging, without the ultimate package “The House”, we are nota consumer so we are not a citizen.
